Head to the lakefront to be in to win prizes

If you’re looking for something new and special to do in Rotorua – and the chance to win awesome prizes – grab the kids and partner and head to the Rotorua lakefront to check out the beautiful new boardwalk and terracing.

These newly built components were officially opened just days ago and to celebrate this milestone, Rotorua Lakes Council is running a selfie photo competition during the school holidays with prizes to giveaway. You could be in to win a jet boat ride with Katoa Lake Rotorua, a floatplane tour to Lake Rotoiti Hot Pools, or a cruise on Lakeland Queen.

It’s been about a year and a half since the lakefront redevelopment project began on the site along the southern shoreline of Lake Rotorua which sits just a block from popular Eat Streat and adjacent to War Memorial Park.

Once the work on this section of the lakefront is completed, you'll be able to enjoy a new playground extension, a new toilet block, continuation of the new shared path toward the western end, grass terracing and landscaping.

There are access points to the new lake edge via three entry points: from the lake end of Memorial Plaza; next to the lakefront tourism operators; and at Motutara Point. The boardwalk is perfect for cycling, running and walking.

For safety reasons, until new lights are installed later this month, the boardwalk is open from 7.30am to 5pm.

While these new developments provide a fresh and innovative space to enjoy Lake Rotorua and views of historic Mokoia Island, the terraces also provide protection from changing lake water levels and weather damage, and will reduce the risk of erosion.

Next year, work on the western end of the lakefront will commence, including the Whare Waka for the Te Arawa Waka Taua, and space for commercial activities.
