Whakarewarewa - The Living Māori Village

Eco-tours

Home of the Tuhourangi and Ngāti Wahiao people and located on a geothermal plateau, Whakarewarewa Village is New Zealand’s oldest continuous Māori tourism experience, even pre-dating the world-famous Pink and White Terraces.

One of New Zealand’s most unforgettable experiences, Whakarewarewa – The Living Māori Village offers an amazing geothermal landscape and nature walk for all ages.

Experience the warmth and authenticity of guides who are direct descendants of the Whakarewarewa Māori legacy guides who shaped the beginnings of the New Zealand tourism industry. Their insights, knowledge and legendary manaakitanga (hospitality) add depth and richness to your cultural journey.

Whakarewarewa Legacy Guided Village Tour
Explore an authentic living Māori village where people live, using natural geothermal resources to cook, bathe and heat their homes as they have for centuries. View the geothermal wonders of Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley including the world-famous Pōhutu Geyser, boiling mud-pools, steam vents and bubbling pools. Take in the historical landmarks and buildings, including an active marae (meeting grounds and focal point of Maori communities), our WWII Memorial Archway, historic churches, and tapu (sacred) burial grounds.

Whaka Geothermal Trails
Enjoy exclusive access to an untouched geothermal landscape during a self-guided walk 30-60 minutes long and suitable for people with a low level of fitness. The trails combine views of native ferns, edible plants and glimpses of our unique geothermal landscape, including colourful steaming lakes and thermal pools that you can only view at Whakarewarewa.

Whakarewarewa E-Bike Trails
A unique and fun way to explore previously non-accessible geothermal landscape in the geohermal reserve is on an e-bike.

This is an ideal outdoor leisurely adventure for families, couples, and small groups of up to 10 people, and for all levels of fitness. Kids can ride independently or on a dual-carry e-bike.

After taking in the stunning sights of bubbling geysers and the varying shades of hot spring lakes and pools, you can continue your e-bike experience through to the world-famous Whakarewarewa Forest, just a five-minute ride away. Book online and pre-order a Picnic Hamper to enjoy along the way, or bring your own hamper.
